Sketching
My Way Through
To
begin with my story, I would like to say that I have very little talent when it
comes to drawing. My hate to drawing started when I was 6 years old, I was
getting in an art class because of the education system of my school. Said
class was obligatory, so I couldn’t skip it. At the beginning, my drawing wasn’t
that bad for a 6-year-old, but as the years passed, the worse my drawing skills
were getting. Back in middle school, I was the joke of the class because I
couldn’t even draw a stickman without screwing it up.
I was so bad at drawing that even my own art class
teacher hit me with a drum stick because one of my drawings was the worst in
the class, (FYI, my mom had a huge feud with him and the school because of
that, but he didn’t get fired, he just got a memorandum). Another time in my
life where my drawing skills were as bad as Kim Yong Un in politics, was when I
was in a drawing a sketch for a painting test in that art class for the end of
the year. I sucked at it so bad that I had to travel to another city to ask my
cousin to draw it for me because she is a billion times better than me at
drawing.
She
is going for an art/design degree at college and through the years she helped
me a lot for art homework that I had. She used to explain and/or send me
directions to do drawings, like easy sketches to copy and step by step
indications to draw difficult drawings. Even though I have tried to better my
skills throughout the years, my biggest problem was procrastination and no
motivation what so ever, because every time I tried to change that, the thought
of “it’s not worth my time, because I don’t want to do it as my career” always
came when I was trying my hardest. Then my motivation was gone as fast as Usain
Bolt was winning gold medals in the Olympic games. Indeed, through the years I
have procrastinated and demotivated myself a lot.
To
make progress like this will help me in everything because I’m someone that
likes to procrastinate a lot, even though some people tell me that I have the
cognitive faculties to do whatever I propose myself to, I have the problem of
having a negative mind setup. So, I decided to do drawing for a 30-day
challenge because I like reading Manga (Japanese Comics) and I like the drawing
style. So, I set a goal to draw a sketch a day to better my drawing skills.
The reason why I want to improve in my drawing skills is
because I’ve seen all my classmates make a progress while I was getting stuck
in the same drawing skills level of an elementary schooler. I felt the
necessity of doing sketches for a challenge like this because I want to prove
wrong to those who told me that I would never improve on my skills not just for
drawing, but for anything.
Another reason why I want to get better drawing skills
it’s because my hobby is reading Manga. I like anime and Manga, and I enjoy the
stories that some of them have. I also like the art and drawing styles of Manga
and anime, which is why I’m choosing that drawing style to do my sketches for
30 days. Also, something that inspired me a lot is a quote from a manga that
I’m reading called One Piece, in chapter 225 of the Manga, on page 12 it states
the following, “A man’s dream…. Never die.” This quote inspired me to not just follow my
dreams, but to know that anything is possible.
Now
that I have finally decided to improve in my drawing skills, I will put full
effort in this challenge to make a change for good. I will begin with easy
sketches of faces, and then I will change to full body drawings or more
detailed faces, eyes, shapes, etc. I will get my examples for drawings from
internet and the Manga volumes that I own myself.
My plan
is to draw easy sketches during the first week of the 30-day challenge, then
the second week will have a little increase on the difficulty. Around the third
week the sketches will be more detailed, but not hard enough to be hard. The
last week will be a challenging one; yet the sketches will be the hardest and
most detailed ones out of all the images that will be copied to show a big
improvement for the end of the 30 days.
While
copying the images from internet or my own Manga volumes I will be changing
from easy sketches of a simple face with non-detailed eyes and/or facial/body
features to very detailed eyes, faces, and bodies and compare my progress. I’ve
already setup how the difficulty of my sketches will increase and how the
improvement will be shown, and now what’s left is to put it on practice and
start it.
